Nature And Wildlife

NATURE AND WILDLIFE WATCHING IN THE HIGHLANDS OF SCOTLAND

BIRDWATCHING
The Badenoch and Strathspey area offers some fantastic opportunities for birdwatching enthusiasts. The celebrities of the birdworld here are the ospreys which return annually to the area in the spring to raise their chicks. The RSPB Loch Garten Hide allows visitors an excellent opportunity to view these magnificent birds. Ospreys can also be seen fishing on the various nearby lochs. Another highlight at the RSPB reserve is the springtime Capercaillie Watch.

Slavonian Grebe,  Golden Eagles, Black Grouse, Ptarmigan, Crested Tits and Crossbills are among the rarer of the huge variety of bird life in the area although you may not have to go too far to spot the last two as they often visit our grounds to feed along with a wide variety of small birds including Siskins, Bullfinches, Long Tailed Tits and  Blue Tits.

RED SQUIRRELS
These charming little mammals are on the endangered species list in the UK but the woodlands and forests of this area makes it an ideal habitat for them. We have our own population of squirrels in Carrbridge and guests are likely  to spot them as they come and go from the woodlands surrounding our hotel to visit the various feeders around the grounds. Abernethy Forest is another good location as is Rothiemurchus Estate.

WILDCATS AND PINE MARTINS AND BADGERS
These very elusive creatures are resident in the area year round but are very difficult to spot. We can advise on local hides and local guides who can assist in finding these shy mammals.

THE SCOTTISH BIG FIVE!
Red Deer, Red Squirrel, Golden Eagle, Harbour Seal, Otter

Get your Highland safari off to a great start at Fairwinds!  In addition to our own red squirrels, we are ideally placed to search out the Scottish Big Five.

THE HIGHLAND WILDLIFE PARK
Experience Scottish wildlife past and present in the spectacular setting of the Highland Wildlife Park. See the amazing variety of animals found in present day Scotland, then step back in time and meet the animals that our ancestors must have known, hundreds, even thousands of years ago. Drive around the Main Reserve in your own car and then investigate the walk-round area by foot. A diverse range of habitats support the unique wildlife found nowhere else in Britain. See Red Squirrels, Golden Eagles, Crested Tits and Otters, Wolves, Arctic Foxes, Badgers, Pine Martens, & Wild Cat - and other rare and lesser known species.
